I thought it would be helpful to collect together the most useful of those services in a single article. All the web addresses mentioned in this article are listed on the Region 8 website on the Links page. Region 8 Website - www.ieee.org/r8 I maintain the Region 8 website which I have recently reorganised to make it easier to use, and have added several new functions. Some of the information it contains are: Contact details for the Region 8 Committee The latest issues of Region 8 News List of Sections with contact information and website addresses Details of IEEE sponsored international conferences in the region Region 8 Awards, Standards, GOLD and Student Activities IEEE Web Account The main IEEE website is at www.ieee.org To use many services on this website you require an IEEE Web Account, which consists of a username and password. You can register for one at www.ieee.org/web/accounts IEEE e-mail alias - eleccomm.ieee.org One of the most useful and popular services available only to members is the IEEE email alias, such as your.name@ieee.org. You can register or update a personal alias of your choice. Any mail sent to your alias will be forwarded to your real Internet email address. You will be identified as an IEEE member by your email alias, and when your regular email address changes, you can update the address it forwards mail to, without having to inform all your colleagues of the change. You also have the comfort of knowing that all your email has been scanned for viruses. The virus scanning feature helps prevent you from receiving viruses in the first place. Attachments within your email that are sent to your IEEE email alias will be scanned for viruses. If a virus is found, the attachment will be deleted, and an alert sent to both the sender and recipient. The virus scanning software is updated daily. A service like this typically costs $30 per year, but as an IEEE member, it is yours FREE of charge. All my mail is received through my IEEE alias, and I have never received a virus they have all been successfully deleted before receipt. Membership Administration The following services are available at www.ieee.org/membership Online Membership Application Online Membership Renewal Change address/contact details Add Society memberships or publications Grade Elevation Associate to Member - www.ieee.org/ra/md/memelv.htm Society Affiliate to Member - www.ieee.org/aftomem Member to Senior Member - www.ieee.org/seniormember Fellow Nomination - www.ieee.org/fellows SAMIEEE - www.ieee.org/samieee The new version of access to the IEEE membership database uses a more user-friendly web-based query system. It can be accessed by Section, Chapter and MD Chairs - please contact me if you need any help using it. Publications IEEE publishes more than 100 of the leading journals in computing, telecommunications, power and dozens of other disciplines. IEEE journals and magazines are the most highly cited periodicals in their respective fields. IEEE Spectrum Online - www.spectrum.ieee.org Free to all IEEE members. The Institute - www.theinstitute.ieee.org Free to all. Society Journals Online www.ieee.org/societies Free to members of that IEEE Society. Society Newsletters - www.theinstitute.ieee.org/socnews.html Free to all. IEEE Xplore - www.ieee.org/ieeexplore With IEEE Xplore, you can browse the complete collection of tables of contents of IEEE transactions, journals, magazines, conference proceedings and standards. You can search and view all IEEE abstracts from 1988, and can download citations in the standard format. Search online and receive the document via fax, mail or electronically. IEL - www.ieee.org/iel The IEEE/IEE Electronic Library provides libraries and research professionals a single source to almost a third of the world's current electrical engineering and computer science literature, granting unparalleled access to publications from the IEEE and the IEE. The IEL has more than 650,000 articles from over 12,000 journals, conference proceedings and IEEE Standards, including full text archives of IEEE and IEE publications since 1988. IEEE Online Catalog & Store - shop.ieee.org This allows online purchase of IEEE Products including books, conference proceedings, standards, journals and merchandise. Standards Get IEEE 802 - standards.ieee.org/getieee802 The Get IEEE 802 program makes IEEE Local and Metropolitan Area Network standards available FREE in PDF format thanks to the sponsors. Standards Shop - shop.ieee.org This allows online purchase of IEEE standards IEEE Standards Online - standards.ieee.org/catalog/olis This allows access to all or a subset of IEEE standards for an annual pre-paid subscription; it is aimed at business, government and academia. Conferences IEEE Conference Database Search - www.ieee.org/conferencesearch The Database includes all meetings run by, or in association with, the IEEE.
